Kerala Considers Transition to Modern Checkposts Despite Declining Revenue

The Transport Department in Kerala is contemplating a shift from traditional Motor Vehicle checkposts to modern ones, with discussions underway with private entities for the development of 16 new checkposts leveraging modern technologies. The proposed move aims to replace the outdated checkposts that primarily inspect interstate vehicles, especially goods carriers, and serve as a deterrent against smuggling. The state plans to invest an estimated Rs 3,000 crores in land acquisition and the establishment of these modern checkposts. However, officials argue that the physical inspection of vehicles is no longer necessary due to the majority of processes being conducted online.

Despite a 2021 directive from the Union Transport Ministry to shut down checkposts in various states, Kerala is considering the introduction of more checkposts. The revenue generated by existing checkposts has dwindled, as services are now offered online through the Parivahan website. Under the proposed plan, the modern checkposts will utilize technology such as cameras to gather information about vehicles before they reach the inspection point, enhancing efficiency and minimizing the need for physical checks.
