Over 3.86 crore people did not receive their second dose of Covid vaccinations within the prescribed frame: Govt

According to the government’s response to an RTI request, nearly 3.86 crore people did not receive their second dosage of anti-Covid vaccines – Covishield and Covaxin – within the time frame specified.

According to the Cowin portal, as of Thursday afternoon, 44,22,85,854 people have received their first dose, with 12,59,07,443 receiving their second. Activist Raman Sharma filed a request under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, requesting information from the government on the number of persons who received the first dosage of vaccines – Covishield and Covaxin – but did not receive the second dose within the time frame specified.

In answer to the inquiry, the Union Health Ministry’s COVID-19 Vaccine Administration Cell stated that the second dose of Covishield should be administered within 84-112 days following the first, while the interval for Covaxin should be between 28-42 days.

“The total number of vaccinees (beneficiaries) who received their first dose of Covishield Vaccine but did not receive their second dose within the stipulated period of time as prescribed by the Government of India as per the Due Report of Co-WIN portal is 3,40,72,993 (data as of 17th August 2021),” according to the response.

It went on to say that the total number of beneficiaries who received their first dose of Covaxin but did not receive their second within the time frame prescribed by the government, as reported in the Co-WIN site, is 46,78,406 people (data as of 17th August 2021).

“It is suggested that vaccinees who have received their first dose of vaccine receive their second dose within the time frame specified. There is no suggestion for such vaccinees who received their first dose of COVID Vaccine but did not receive their second dosage within the time frame specified by the Government of India to receive their first dose again “it said

The government suggests in the website’s Frequently Asked Questions section that “both doses of vaccine should be taken to realise the full advantage of vaccination.”

It states that “both doses must be of the same vaccination kind.”
