Kerala Govt to charge for post-Covid treatment of children

Thiruvananthapuram: Children who are likely to be infected with Covid-19 in the third wave will not be eligible for free post-Covid treatment. The decision to charge for APL card holders’ treatment may also prove costly for patients under the age of 18.

The entire treatment for those under the age of 18 is currently free under various schemes, with no distinction made between the APL and BPL categories. However, the order issued by the Health Secretary states that children suffering from post-Covid syndrome or Multi-system Inflammatory Syndrome, which has been discovered in children suffering from critical Covid issues, must pay for treatment at the same rate as others.

RBSK and Arogya Kiranam were earlier schemes that provided free treatment to children.

Treatment and surgeries for thirty health issues are provided free of charge to children under the age of 18. However, Covid is no longer a part of any such schemes.

The government may reconsider its decision.

According to reports, the state’s financial crisis prompted the Department of Finance to direct the Health Department to charge for post-Covid treatment for non-BPL cardholders under the age of 18. According to reports, the Chief Minister and Health Minister were also unaware of this decision. Because the number of patients suffering from post-Covid syndrome has increased in the state, the government has requested that the obscure provisions in the new order be removed.
