Proposed Overhaul by SCERT: Class 12 Only to Have Annual Public Exams, Draft Framework Revealed

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has introduced a draft framework for reshaping school curriculum, advocating for the introduction of yearly public exams exclusively for Class 12, the concluding phase of school education. SCERT has formulated this draft, and the government is set to release the associated documents shortly.

Presently, public exams are administered for both higher secondary and SSLC levels. However, the new proposal suggests restricting these exams to Class 12, with continuous assessment becoming the primary method for evaluating students’ academic performance in other grades. Furthermore, the draft proposes integrating global benchmarks to elevate the caliber of educators in schools. In this pursuit, students should be empowered to assess their teachers, with the objective of ensuring that students achieve the designated learning outcomes by the culmination of each academic year.

Key Points from the Draft Framework:

  1. Consideration of a semester-based examination system, as the current system assesses subject-specific knowledge rather than holistic development. Public exams should exclusively apply to Class 12, while continuous evaluation is recommended for other grade levels.
  2. Shifting the focus from lessons to learning objectives, which should be appraised during final examinations.
  3. Elevating critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and logical reasoning to a prominent position in the curriculum.
  4. Exploring the potential of information communication and artificial intelligence technologies to provide support.
