In India, 25,072 new COVID-19 cases are reported in 24 hours, the lowest number in 160 days

New Delhi: According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India witnessed its lowest single-day spike in 160 days and registered 25,072 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours (August 23, 2021). India’s active caseload has now dropped to its lowest level in 155 days, standing at 3,33,924. According to the health ministry, active cases amount to 1.03 percent of overall cases, which is the lowest since March 2020.

In the same 24 hours, there were also 44,157 recoveries and 389 deaths. With this, the overall number of COVID-19 cases in the country has risen to 3,24,49,306, with 3,16,80,626 recovering and 4,34,756 dying.

In addition, 12,95,160 coronavirus tests were performed on Sunday, bringing the total number of tests performed to 50,75,51,399. According to the health ministry, the daily positivity rate is presently 1.94 percent, and it has been less than 3% for the last 28 days, while the weekly positivity rate is 1.91 percent, and it has been less than 3% for the last 59 days.

It should be mentioned that India’s COVID-19 tally will surpass one crore on December 19, 2020, two crore on May 4, and three crores on June 23.

Overall vaccine coverage, on the other hand, has climbed to 58.25 crores.

Meanwhile, a Home Ministry expert panel has warned the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) of the impending threat of the third wave of COVID-19, which might climax in October. The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) expert group has also stated that the third wave will harm children, who may be vulnerable to the same hazards as elders.

While emphasising that paediatric facilities across the country are insufficient to deal with such scenarios, the expert panel also advocated for increased medical infrastructure and healthcare facilities.
