Avoid flying into Kabul International Airport, according to the US Embassy, citing “security threats”

WASHINGTON: According to an embassy security alert issued late Wednesday, the US embassy in Kabul has advised American citizens not to travel to the Hamid Karzai International Airport at this time.

Citizens already at the airport’s Abbey Gate, East Gate, and North Gate were advised to leave immediately, according to the embassy’s security alert.

The alert, which was posted on the embassy’s website, did not specify why it was issued. “US citizens who are at the Abbey Gate, East Gate, or North Gate now should leave immediately,” the US Embassy in Kabul said in a security alert.

We are advising US citizens to avoid travelling to the airport and to avoid airport gates at this time due to security threats outside the gates of Kabul airport, unless you receive individual instructions from a US government representative,” the US Embassy said.

It came after US President Joe Biden and other administration officials warned of an Islamic State threat to evacuation operations as crowds thronged airport gates, desperate to flee the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.

The warning advised Americans to “always be aware of your surroundings, especially in large crowds.”
