In 18 months, Koo, an Indian-made Twitter competitor, has surpassed 1 crore downloads

Koo, the microblogging network, revealed on Thursday that it had surpassed one billion installs since its introduction in March 2020. (August 26). Aprameya Radhakrishna and Mayank Bidawatka founded Koo, which presently allows users to express themselves in eight languages: Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Assamese, Bangla, and English.

The application saw an increase in downloads as a result of the spat between Twitter and the Indian government over new IT guidelines. Koo witnessed 85 lakh people (8.5 million) download the app between February and August 2021, according to a company release.

The microblogging site has added a number of new features to allow more Indians, particularly those in Tier 2 and beyond cities, to participate in online dialogues. The programme displays people who have expressed an interest in their native language, assisting them in communicating with local communities.

In recent months, major figures from Bollywood, politics, sports, literature, and journalism have joined the native programme, which is considered India’s equivalent to Twitter.

Bollywood celebrities Anupam Kher, Tiger Shroff, and Kangana Ranaut, as well as politicians Nitin Gadkari, Kamal Nath, Ashok Gehlot, and Yogi Adityanath, have all registered accounts on Koo.

Among the athletes on the platform are Mohammed Shami, Wriddhiman Saha, Aakash Chopra, and Javagal Srinath. In the last several months, 14 chief ministers of Indian states have also joined the microblogging site.

After reaching one billion instals, a Koo spokesperson stated that the company was founded on the vision of creating a digital platform where millions of Indians could freely express themselves and share their opinions in their favourite language. “Since our introduction in March 2020, the response has been very positive. Koo has now received one billion downloads. Our future growth will be even faster than what we have seen in the past. We are both humbled and delighted to help local digital enterprises go worldwide as India strives to realise the ‘Aatmanirbhar Digital India’ ideal and unify the country via technology and languages.”
