COVID-19 claimed 4,099 lives in Kerala in the last month

Thiruvananthapuram: The death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic is rising at an alarming rate in Kerala. In Kerala, the disease claimed the lives of 4,099 people in the last month. Notably, the dead included 85 people who had received both doses of the disease vaccine.

The toll listed above was in effect from July 26 to August 26, 2021.

Overall, the disease, which was first reported in India from the state in January 2020, has claimed over 20,000 lives, according to official figures, though experts both within and outside the state believe the true figure could be much higher. This figure excludes the 10,000 likely deaths during the first wave of the pandemic last year, which were officially ignored.

After allegations that the figures for COVID-19 deaths had been tampered with, the state began classifying COVID-19 deaths using new parameters in July 2021. At least 150 deaths have been reported every day since then. A total of 162 COVID deaths were confirmed on Thursday as well.

On Thursday, the official COVID-91 death toll stood at 20,134.

Because even those who have been fully vaccinated succumb to the disease, the elderly and the severely ill must remain vigilant, even if they have completed the vaccination process.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 patients being transferred to ICU or ventilator is increasing slowly. As of Thursday (August 26, 2021), there are 2,047 people in the ICU, with 790 on a ventilator.

On the same day, 30,007 new COVID-19 cases were reported across the state. On Thursday, 44,658 people tested positive for the disease across the country.

Following a meeting of the COVID-19 review panel, the state administration is expected to announce additional restrictions.
