Five states account for 70% of India’s COVID-19 caseload; the Centre proposes a strategy to slow the rise

New Delhi: a According to figures from the Union Health Ministry, India’s active caseload increased to 3.44 lakh on Friday, with five states accounting for around 70% of the entire caseload in the country.

Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh have at least 2.39 lakh cases. Kerala has the highest number of active coronavirus cases in the country, with 1.81 lakh active cases, accounting for more than 52% of the total.

Only three other states have more than 10,000 active cases: Karnataka (19,326), Tamil Nadu (18,069), and Andhra Pradesh (14,488). There are fewer cases in the remaining states and territories. Telangana, with 6,246 active cases, is responsible for 1.81 percent of the country’s active load.

Meanwhile, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan raised alarm about the rapid increase in coronavirus cases and ordered states to implement a five-pronged plan to combat the abrupt surge in infections. Also on Friday, the Centre requested Kerala and Maharashtra to explore night curfews in regions with high coronavirus case rates, as the country reported more than 40,000 new infections for the second day in a row.
