The Maharashtra government warns that the ‘third wave’ could be a tsunami of 60 lakh cases

With India potentially heading for a Covid-19 “third wave,” the Maharashtra government warned on Friday that the state could see around 60 lakh cases in such a scenario.

According to Health Minister Rajesh Tope, while the first wave affected around 20 lakh people, followed by 40 lakh in the second, the dreaded second wave could affect more than 60 lakh people.
“Nearly 12% of these would require oxygen support during treatment… We are working hard to achieve 100% vaccination as soon as possible “He stated.
He claimed that the third wave had already begun in the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, and other countries, and urged people to take extra precautions during upcoming festivals such as Janmashtami, Ganeshotsav, Navratri, and Diwali to avoid an increase in cases.

Tope has discussed the issue with his Kerala counterpart Veena George, whose state recorded 31,000 new cases on Thursday, with Onam celebrations cited as the primary cause, but authorities have increased testing.
He revealed that, in order to address the impending health crisis, the Maharashtra government is recruiting more doctors, nurses, and other medical-paramedical personnel, as well as improving health-care capacity, including for juveniles.
“We intend to hire 7,000 medical personnel, including 1,200 doctors, by the end of September. We are increasing liquid medical oxygen production, increasing the number of beds in Covid hospitals, and purchasing 1,000 new ambulances “Tope stated.

Furthermore, the government has approved a Rs 1,500 raise in the salaries of 71,000 ASHA workers, for which an amount of Rs 275 crore has been budgeted.
Officials with the Health Department stated that at least nine of the worst-affected districts in the previous two waves “are being monitored very closely” to ensure that infections and fatalities can be controlled, in addition to taking precautions to protect children and infants.
The situation has already become concerning, as the state has already recorded over 200 cases of the Covid-19 variant, Delta Plus, which has claimed the lives of five patients to date.

The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation was stunned this week when 22 young students, mostly under the age of 18, were found infected out of 95 at the St Joseph’s School & Orphanage in Dongri, and the institution was promptly closed on Thursday.
