Pakistan reaps its first-ever ginger harvest in Chakwal

On Sunday, Senator Dr. Sania Nishtar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation, inaugurated the first ginger cultivation in Chakwal’s Balkasar region. The harvest celebration was organized by Agrionics Farms. This was the first ginger harvest trial in Pakistan. The crop was grown in eleven months. Ginger is in high demand as a key ingredient in Pakistani cooking. It is not, however, farming in Pakistan. As a result, all harvest is imported to meet domestic demand.

During the event, Dr. Sania stated that ginger has the potential to become a major crop and a game-changer in the farming industry. Agriculture is inextricably linked to poverty reduction in Pakistan. She went on to say that the government, business, research institutions, innovators, and farmers can all work together to create synergies and promote agri-value chains. This will have an impact on poverty alleviation, job creation, economic growth, and international trade expansion.

Experts spoke to attendees about the sustainable growth and maintenance of ginger, as well as how to harvest this crop properly. Experts provided research-based information on the agricultural benefits of producing ginger locally. Following the knowledge-sharing, all participants made their way to the field for the ceremonial inauguration and demonstrations. Chairman PARC reported to Dr Sania on the effectiveness of the ginger cultivation effort and its potential to help Pakistan’s agricultural sector.

According to other analysts, Pakistan has an agri-economy industry that needs to improve, but it has now begun its journey toward self-sufficiency. It was the first commercially successful ginger farming enterprise, thanks to drip irrigation, sprinklers, and shade fabric.

Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Ali, Chairman of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), Muhammad Najeebullah, Director of the Vegetable Research Institute in Faisalabad, and other experts attended the event.
