Bihar floods: Ganga, Gandak, and Kosi rivers reach dangerous levels after heavy rains

The Ganga River and its tributaries have reached dangerous levels in several areas of Bihar as a result of heavy rains in the state capital Patna and neighbouring Nepal.

According to officials, the Ganga River in Patna is flowing 12 cm above the danger mark, and the Gandak and Kosi rivers have also crossed the danger level in several areas across the state.

Sanjeev Kumar Suman, Director of the Central Water Commission in Patna, told ANI, “It is unquestionably a source of concern. People and animals are displaced.”

“Gandak and Budhi Gandak are exceeding the danger level. In Khagaria, the Kosi River is flowing above the danger level “Suman stated.

“Both Nepal and Patna have been experiencing heavy rains over the last few days. If the water level rises upstream, it will have an impact on the downstream “He stated.

Furthermore, the Commission stated in a tweet, “The #Gandak River continues to flow in an EXTREME FLOOD SITUATION at #Lalganj in Bihar’s #VAISHALI district. It is flowing at the previous HFL level of 51.75 m. A hydrograph has been appended.”

Meanwhile, the East Central Railway suspended rail service between Darbhanga and Samastipur on Wednesday due to flooding near the rail bridge between Hayaghat and Thalwara stations in the Samastipur division.

On Tuesday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas of Darbhanga and stated that the state government is constantly monitoring the flood situation in the Darbhanga district.

The Chief Minister also stated that affected families will receive Rs 6,000 in financial assistance. “The state government is constantly keeping an eye on the situation in the affected areas. During the monsoon season, Bihar is frequently flooded. The government is working on a solution to control the water level in Bihar’s rivers. We hope that the plan will not exacerbate the situation in the future, as it is now “Kumar had informed reporters.
