Kerala Government Allocates INR 378.57 Crore for Kochi Metro’s Phase II Pink Line Construction

The Kerala Government has approved a budget of INR 378.57 crore for the construction of the second phase of the Kochi Metro Rail Project. This funding will support the development of the Pink Line, covering an 11.8-kilometer stretch from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad via Info Park. The Phase II project was initially sanctioned in July 2018, featuring the Pink Line extension with 11 stations and a length of 11.2 kilometers, estimated to cost around INR 2,310 crore. The detailed project report for this phase received approval from the Union Cabinet in September 2022, with an estimated cost reduced to INR 1,957.05 crore. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), a joint venture between the Centre and the state government, anticipates completing Phase II and opening it to the public by 2028.

The allocation of funds for the Pink Line construction marks a significant step toward enhancing Kochi’s metro connectivity, addressing transportation needs, and fostering urban development. The expansion aligns with the government’s vision to improve public transportation infrastructure, providing citizens with efficient and sustainable mobility options. The Pink Line, once completed, is expected to ease commuting for residents, reduce traffic congestion, and contribute to the overall growth and accessibility of the Kochi metropolitan region.
