Taliban to reopen Afghan boys’ schools from Saturday

New Delhi: Afghan schools will reopen for boys on Saturday, according to the new Taliban ministry of education, which did not specify when girls would be able to return to their classes.

More than a month after the Taliban took control of Kabul, most educational institutions remained closed as the Taliban struggled to reopen the economy and restore normal life in the cities.

Girls up to the sixth grade have attended some of the schools that have remained open, and women students have attended university classes. However, girls’ high schools have been closed.

Taliban officials have stated that they will not replicate the previous Taliban government’s fundamentalist policies, which prohibited girls’ education and have promised that girls will be able to study as long as they do so in segregated classrooms.

While the Taliban did not order school closures following their takeover, the movement has stated that the security situation meant that many activities for women and girls were not yet possible, and the most recent statement made no mention of girls at all.

It stated that state and private primary and secondary schools, as well as official madrasa religious schools, would reopen on Saturday.

“All teachers and male students should attend school,” according to the statement.
