Following the outage of Facebook, Telegram gains 70 million new users in a single day

New Delhi: While Facebook’s services were down for nearly six hours this week, messaging app Telegram gained over 70 million new users.

According to CEO Pavel Durov, during the massive Facebook outage, Telegram saw a record increase in user registration and activity.

“Telegram’s daily growth rate outpaced the norm by an order of magnitude, and we welcomed over 70 million refugees from other platforms in a single day,” Durov said in a statement.

“I am proud of our team’s handling of the unprecedented growth because Telegram continued to work flawlessly for the vast majority of our users,” Durov added.

On Monday evening, millions of users, including those in India, we’re unable to send or receive messages on social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger.

According to DownDetector, a website that tracks WhatsApp outages, 40% of users were unable to download the app, 30% had difficulty sending messages, and 22% had issues with the web version.

People took to Twitter to report issues with Facebook family apps, including posting memes and GIFs.

Durov announced in January that Telegram had reached 500 million monthly active users.
