Kerala will provide an additional Rs 5000 per month to BPL families of COVID-19 deceased

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced that BPL-dependent families of those who died as a result of COVID-19 will receive Rs 5,000 per month in addition to the financial assistance they are already receiving.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the Chief Minister stated that the decision was made in a Cabinet meeting, where it was also decided that the additional relief would be available only to BPL dependents of the deceased, adding that this relief would also be provided to BPL families of those who may die as a result of COVID-19 in the coming days.

Vijayan went on to say that this additional relief would not make such families ineligible for other relief packages under social welfare, welfare funds, or pensions, and that families residing in the state or country of those who died outside the state or country would also be eligible for the benefit, and that while including them in the BPL category, the deceased’s income would not be considered.

“If such families have a government employee or an income taxpayer, they will be ineligible for the new relief package, and village officers have been directed to ensure such persons are not present when deciding applications seeking additional assistance,” the CM said in a statement.

The dependents were asked to submit their applications in a simple one-page form, and the District Collectors and Revenue authorities in charge were tasked with taking the necessary steps.

At 8 a.m., the death toll had risen to 4,514,435 due to 246 new fatalities, according to data from the Union Health Ministry. It went on to say that the daily increase in new coronavirus infections has been less than 30,000 for 20 days in a row, and that less than 50,000 daily new cases have been reported for 109 days in a row.

So far, the country has reported 4,51,435 deaths, including 1,39,670 in Maharashtra, 37,916 in Karnataka, 35,833 in Tamil Nadu, 26,571 in Kerala, 25,089 in Delhi, 22,897 in Uttar Pradesh, and 18,935 in West Bengal.
