Facebook intends to hire 10,000 people in the European Union to build the’metaverse’

California: Facebook Inc plans to hire 10,000 people in the European Union over the next five years to help build the so-called metaverse, a nascent online world in which people exist and communicate in shared virtual spaces.

This would be a significant step forward for the company, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasised in recent months.

In September, Facebook committed USD 50 million to the development of the metaverse, in which companies such as Roblox Corp and “Fortnite” creator Epic Games have a strong foothold.

Previously, the company tested a new virtual-reality remote work app in which users of the company’s Oculus Quest 2 headsets could hold meetings as avatar versions of themselves.

Facebook also announced in July that it was forming a product team to work on the metaverse as part of Facebook Reality Labs, its augmented reality and virtual reality division.

“This investment (in new jobs) reflects our confidence in the strength of the European tech industry and the potential of European tech talent,” the company stated.

“Europe is extremely important to Facebook,” the company stated.
