The Kerala government is getting ready to open dams; a high alert has been issued; the Idamalayar and Pampa dams will be the first to open

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala state government has announced that all necessary steps have been taken to open all ten dams that have been placed on’red alert’ due to rising water levels. A final decision in this regard will be made after considering the situation tomorrow.

The sole purpose of opening the dams is to keep the water level below 90%. In light of the emergency situation, a high alert has been issued, advising the public to avoid coastal areas and refrain from engaging in fishing or other water-related activities.

The decision has been made to open the Pampa dam at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, followed by the Idamalayar dam at 6 a.m., before the shutters of the Idukki dam are opened. At 11 a.m., the Idukki dam will be opened. The decision was made because the dams’ catchment area continued to receive heavy rainfall.

People in the affected area have been issued an alert. “The dam’s two shutters will be raised to a height of 50 cm. A million litres of water will be released from the dam every second “Roshy Augustine, Kerala’s Water Resources Minister, stated. The KSEB has issued a warning that the dam’s water level is expected to rise to 2398.86 ft by Tuesday.

Residents living near the Periyar River have been issued a warning.

With water levels rising in catchment areas due to heavy rains, a red alert has been issued for ten dams in Kerala, two shutters of the Kakki dam have been opened, and pilgrimage to the Lord Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala has been halted for the time being, state Revenue Minister K Rajan said on Monday.

Rajan stated that a red alert has been issued for ten dams, including Kakki, Sholayar, Matupatti, Moozhiyar, Kundala, and Peechi, the majority of which are located in the state’s Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Thrissur districts.
In addition, an orange alert has been issued for eight other dams, he said. The water level was rising in several dams, including Sholayar, Pamba, Kakki, and Idamalayar. On Monday, the Sholayar dam was officially opened. Flooding has occurred in the low-lying areas of Cherickal, Poozhikadu, Mudiyoorkonam, and Kurambala near Pandalam, along the banks of the Achankovil river.
