Negative calorie food is defined as food that consumes more energy during digestion than it provides to the body. The calorie cost of digesting the food would be greater than its energy content.

These foods are high in fibre and have a low glycemic index. Calories are an important part of food, and everything we eat contains them. Calories are classified into two types. The first is empty calories, which have little nutritional value but are high in calories and promote weight gain. Foods with a high fibre and water content have fewer calories and require more energy to digest; these are known as negative calorie foods.

Soumita Biswas, Chief Nutritionist, Aster RV Hospital, shares the following 5 negative calorie foods:

Celery has a calorie count of 16 per 100g. It is high in fibre, vitamin A, vitamin C, and folate. Because the majority of its calorie value is stored in cellulose, it is one of the most popular negative food items. Because celery is high in undigested fibre, it provides very few calories to our bodies.

Berries: Colorful berries like blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries have only 32 kcal per half-cup serving. Berries are referred to as negative calorie foods due to their low glycemic index and high protein content. It also contains antioxidants, which protect us against a variety of cancers.

Tomatoes have 19kcal/100g. Aside from water, it is a good source of fibre, potassium, and vitamin C. Tomatoes also contain lycopene, an antioxidant that has been shown to protect against skin cancer.

Carrots have 41 kcal per 100g. It contains vitamin A, which is beneficial to the eyes. Carrot fibre content keeps the stomach fuller for longer, which aids in weight loss.

Cucumber has 15 kcal per 100g. This vegetable has a high water content, which is great for quenching thirst while also providing all of the essential vitamins and minerals. Cucumbers have a high water content, making them excellent for hydration. This fruit, in addition to quenching thirst, contains dietary fibre and is beneficial to people with irritable bowel syndrome and diabetes.
