Mullaperiyar dam: Kerala instructs Tamil Nadu to keep the water level at 137 feet.

Thiruvananthapuram: Tamil Nadu has agreed to keep the water level at Mullaperiyar dam at 138 feet, according to minister Roshy Augustine on Tuesday.

Earlier today, at the high power committee meeting, Kerala demanded that Tamil Nadu keep the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam at 137 feet. The demand was made after Tamil Nadu stated that the level could rise to 142 feet. “Committee chairman Gulshan Raj requested that the level remain at 138 feet,” the minister said at a press conference.
Kerala cited a 2018 Supreme Court decision that ordered Tamil Nadu to keep the dam at a maximum level of 139.99 feet. The current situation is exacerbated by the fact that the northeast monsoon has yet to begin.

The additional water will be delivered to the Idukki dam if the levels remain as high as Tamil Nadu desires. The Kerala representative argued at the meeting that the state should take more water from the Mullaperiyar dam and store it in the Vaigai reservoir in Madurai.

If the level reaches 138 feet by October 30, the water will be released through the spillway, according to Tamil Nadu.

Kerala was represented at the meeting by Additional Chief Secretary T K Jose IAS. Sandeep Saxena IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, represented Tamil Nadu (PWD). The meeting was presided over by Gulshan Raj, Chairman of the Central Water Commission’s Committee.
