Since July, Whatsapp has banned 93 lakh Indian accounts; here’s why.

New Delhi: According to Whatsapp’s Compliance report, which was released on Monday (November 1), the company banned 22 lakh 9 thousand Indian accounts in September.

WhatsApp stated in its monthly compliance report that it received a total of 560 complaints from September 1st to September 31st, of which 121 were about Account Support, 309 were about Ban Appeal, 49 were about Other Support, 49 were about Product Support, and 32 were about Safety.

Whatsapp also stated that it auctioned off 51 Indian accounts in September. Whatsapp claims to have banned over 22 lakh Indian accounts using the aforementioned abuse detection approach, which also includes action taken in response to negative feedback received from Whatsapp users via the “Report” feature.

The new IT rules, which went into effect on May 26, require large digital platforms (with more than 5 million users) to publish compliance reports every month, detailing complaints received and actions taken.

Whatsapp published the first monthly compliance report under the new IT rules on July 15th. Since then, Whatsapp has blocked over 93 lakh Indian accounts.
