Farmers will march to Parliament every day during the Winter Session to commemorate one year of agitation

The apex body of farmers, Samyukta Kisan Morcha, has announced that nearly 500 farmers will march peacefully to Parliament every day during the Winter Session beginning November 29.

The daily march to Parliament has been announced to commemorate the one-year anniversary of farmers’ protests against the Centre’s three farm laws. Farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have been protesting at the Delhi borders since November 26 last year against the laws, which were stayed by the Supreme Court in January.

Following a meeting on Tuesday, the SKM, the umbrella body of 40 farmer unions leading the uprising, made the announcement. The amalgam said in a statement that it will mark the one-year anniversary of the movement on and after November 26 in a “massive” way across India.

“The SKM decided that from November 29 until the end of this Parliament session, 500 selected farmer volunteers will move to Parliament in tractor trollies every day, peacefully and with full discipline, to assert their rights to protest in the national capital,” the statement said.

This will be done to “increase the pressure” on the central government in order to “force it to concede the demands for which farmers across the country have launched a historic struggle,” according to the statement.

Farmers had also staged a “foot march” to Parliament earlier in March to protest the contentious three farm laws. On January 26, protesters broke down barricades, attacked security personnel, and stormed the Red Fort, where they hoisted a religious flag.

According to the SKM statement, on November 26, there will be massive mobilizations from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan at all Delhi borders.

For this occasion, all farm unions in the SKM will mobilise farmers in force. Huge public gatherings will take place there (at the borders) on that day. “Honor will be paid to the more than 650 martyrs who have died in this struggle so far,” it said.

On November 26, the SKM has also called for massive mahapanchayats in state capitals. The Winter session of Parliament will begin on November 29 and will last until December 23.
