Heavy rain is expected to hit Kerala today, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert in six districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for six districts in Kerala today (November 13) and five districts tomorrow (November 14), indicating heavy rains over the weekend. Over Kerala, the northeast monsoon has been active. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Idukki are the six districts, while the five are Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki.

Meanwhile, the Idukki district Collector stated that if the rain continues in the district, the shutters of the Cheruthoni Dam of the Idukki reservoir may be opened on Saturday (Nov 13) or Sunday (Nov 14). The Collector advised residents living downstream of the Idukki dam and along the banks of the Periyar river to be cautious.

According to the IMD website, Kerala received 86% more rain from October 1 to October 12. The normal rainfall expected from October 1 to 12 was 392.9 mm, but the state has received 732.4 mm so far, according to the website.

According to the IMD’s weather bulletin issued Friday evening, there will be “heavy to very heavy rainfall” in isolated areas of Kerala. Thunderstorms and lightning will accompany the showers. Heavy rain is expected to continue to pelt the state until November 16.

Several areas of the state experienced landslides and waterlogging as a result of the heavy October rains, and at least 42 people were killed in rain-related incidents. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu, Kerala’s neighboring state, has been experiencing heavy rainfall over the last week, causing flooding and disruptions in the capital Chennai and other areas. While the situation has improved since Friday, isolated showers continue to fall in some areas of the state.
