Italy Mourns the Loss of Gigi Riva, All-Time Leading Scorer, and Football Icon

Italy is mourning the passing of Gigi Riva, the legendary footballer known as the “Rombo di Tuono” (Rumble of Thunder), who held the title of the all-time leading goalscorer for the Italy men’s national team. Riva, 79, passed away on Monday, leaving a significant legacy in Italian football.

Riva, renowned for the potency of his shot, scored 35 goals in 42 appearances for Italy, earning him the nickname “Rombo di Tuono.” The Italian soccer federation (FIGC) confirmed his death, prompting an outpouring of tributes from fans, officials, and fellow players.

The FIGC President, Gabriele Gravina, expressed deep sadness, describing Riva as a national hero. Gravina highlighted Riva’s contributions to Italy’s victories in the European Championship in 1968 and the World Cup in 2006, where he served as team manager.

Despite receiving lucrative offers from other clubs, Riva spent the majority of his career at Cagliari, helping the team secure its only Serie A title in 1970. He remains the club’s record scorer, with 205 goals in 374 matches. Riva’s loyalty to Cagliari and his impact on the team elevated him to an iconic status.

Riva’s role extended beyond his playing days as he served as the honorary president of Cagliari and later held the position of president from 1986-87. The club, along with several others in Italy, paid heartfelt tributes to the football legend on social media.

As a player, Riva played a pivotal role in Italy’s success, winning the European Championship in 1968 and finishing as runners-up in the World Cup in 1970. He later became the team manager and played a key role in Italy’s victory at the 2006 World Cup.

Gianluigi Buffon, former Italy goalkeeper and part of the 2006 World Cup-winning team, expressed his sorrow at Riva’s passing. Buffon acknowledged Riva’s guidance and influence both on and off the field.

Italy President Sergio Mattarella also paid tribute to Riva, recognizing his sporting achievements, character, and the affection he earned from millions of Italians.

A minute’s silence will be observed before the start of all soccer matches in Italy as a mark of respect for Gigi Riva. The football community, fans, and the nation as a whole are mourning the loss of one of Italy’s greatest football icons.
