IMD issues flash flood warnings for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry – see weather updates for more information

Chennai : Heavy rainfall in several districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry is causing reservoirs in the region to overflow, prompting the Central Water Commission (CWC) to issue an advisory to dam operators on Thursday (November 18) to maintain strict vigil and release water carefully.

The heavy rain is the result of a depression over the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of north Tamil Nadu, which moved at a speed of 23 kmph on Thursday morning and was centred about 250 kilometres from Chennai, 220 kilometres from Puducherry, and 210 kilometres from Karaikal. According to the IMD, the depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal moved north-westwards and crossed the north Tamilnadu and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Chennai between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. on November 19, 2021.

Meanwhile, flash flood warnings have been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry. Its Land Surface Model shows as much as 95-100 percent saturation in a few watersheds in Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam adjoining North Tamil Nadu and Tamil Nadu, Pudducherry, and Karaikal subdivisions of IMD, and as little as 80-85 percent saturation in a few watersheds in Rayalaseema and Kerala IMD subdivisions.

“The depression isn’t severe. However, because the north-east monsoon is active, the moist north-easterly winds converging along the Tamil Nadu coast are expected to bring in copious amounts of rain “Sunitha Devi, senior scientist at IMD, elaborated.
