It is illegal in Portugal for bosses to call employees after work hours

Employees have been working nonstop for nearly two years now, all over the world, as work-life balance has been thrown into disarray as a result of the pandemic. People are confined to their homes all day to complete their work now that operations have become remote. To make matters worse, many are required to work extra hours. This has resulted in significant inconvenience and distress, as well as an increase in mental and physical health issues at an alarming rate.

As nations consider ways to reduce extreme work pressure, Portugal has made it illegal for managers and bosses to contact their employees after working hours, ensuring that their employees do not feel the heavy workload.

This is a novel approach to considering employees’ mental health and stability. A boss will be held liable if they contact their employees after working hours, and they will also be held liable for increased gas and electricity rates as a result of an extensive work from home environment.

“The pandemic has accelerated the need to regulate what needs to be regulated,” said Ana Mendes Godinho, Portugal’s Minister of Labour and Social Security. She has also stated that this could be a significant step toward making Portugal one of the best places to work in the world. This can also be an effective strategy for attracting ‘digital nomads’ to Portugal. ‘Digital nomads’ are people who, given the right conditions, can work online from anywhere in the world.

Many companies and businesses push their employees to do more work without taking their health and safety concerns into account. A large percentage of people have experienced at least one major case of mental illness or other significant health problem, according to numerous studies and researches.

Because of the insane work hours, the number of mental illnesses and heart attacks has risen dramatically in the last year. Relationships have deteriorated as a result of the shift in priorities that has occurred since the implementation of remote working. Due to neglect and ignorance, the lack of boundaries between personal and professional lives has resulted in significant fights at home.

Companies are forgetting the most important aspect of managing the entire organisation – the employees – in order to maintain productivity levels. Ineffective work will continue to seep through the gaping cracks and holes, paving the way for a crumbling employee structure unless the employees are in excellent shape and have a sharp, healthy state of mind.
