Farmers’ protests: SKM sends open letter to PM Narendra Modi, THESE ARE THE SIX DEMANDS

New Delhi: Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the repeal of three contentious farm laws, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha issued an open letter to him on Sunday (November 21), outlining six demands.

Refusing to end the agitation as suggested by the PM, the SKM stated that the protests would continue as planned until all of their demands were met.

The farmers’ group applauded the PM’s decision to repeal the three laws, but noted that it was a “unilateral declaration rather than a bilateral solution.”

Farmers reiterated their call for a law ensuring a minimum support price (MSP) for all farmers. Aside from that, the SKM urged a discussion on a number of other issues.

Here are the six demands made by SKM in their letter to PM Modi:

1. MSP based on total cost of production should be made a legal entitlement of all farmers for all agricultural produce, so that every farmer in the country can be assured of the MSP announced by the government for their entire crop.

2. The draught ‘Electricity Amendments Bill, 2020/2021’ has been withdrawn.

3. Removal of farmer-punishment provisions in the ‘Commission for Air Quality Management in the National Capital Region and Adjacent Areas Act, 2021’

4. The assassination and arrest of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, whose son is one of the accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

5. The withdrawal of all cases filed during the protests against thousands of farmers in Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and other states.

6. Compensation and rehabilitation assistance for the families of the over 700 farmers killed during the agitation. Land near the Singhu Border should be set aside for the construction of a memorial for the deceased farmers.
