After the Astor SUV, MG Motor India plans to launch an electric car under Rs 15 lakh as its next vehicle

MG Motor India announced that by the end of the next fiscal year, it will “drive” an electric vehicle priced between Rs 10-15 lakh. Currently, the company sells the electric SUV ‘ZS EV,’ which comes in two variants priced at Rs 21 lakh and Rs 24.68 lakh (ex-showroom). As its next new product, it intends to launch an electric crossover vehicle based on a global platform but customized for the Indian market.

“Our next product after the SUV Astor has been an EV, and now we have been very encouraged with the absolute clarity from the government side that the EV is the way to go,” said MG Motor India President and Managing Director Rajeev Chaba. “We have decided that we will introduce an EV by the end of the next fiscal year.”

He expects the price to range between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh and will target the mass segment of personal electric mobility. “It’s actually a crossover, and it’ll be based on a global platform that we’ll develop, and it’ll be an EV for the mass market for all emerging markets, including India,” Chaba explained.

“We will tailor this vehicle to the range, Indian regulations, and customer preferences. It will be tailored specifically for India. We will begin working on it immediately “, he continued. Furthermore, he stated that MG Motor India will localise a large number of parts for its next EV in order to meet the government’s guidelines for the production linked (PLI) scheme for the auto sector.

Batteries, motors, and other components would fall into this category. Hector, ZS EV, and Gloster are currently available from the company.
