Chennai Airport Halts Operations as Cyclone Michaung Forces Flight Diversions to Bengaluru

The operations at Chennai airport have been halted due to the impact of Cyclone Michaung, leading to the diversion of around 33 flights to Bengaluru’s Kempegowda Airport. The severe weather conditions, including heavy rains and strong winds, prompted the closure of Chennai airport for both arrival and departure operations until 11 pm on Monday. Numerous domestic and international flights, including those operated by Indigo, SpiceJet, Etihad, Lufthansa, and Gulf Air, were diverted to Kempegowda Airport in Bengaluru. The disruption also affected train services, with cancellations and delays reported as water levels rose above the danger mark in certain areas, prompting the suspension of a bridge between Basin Bridge and Vyasarpadi.

Cyclone Michaung, located over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, has been causing incessant rains and is expected to cross the coast in Andhra Pradesh on December 5. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued alerts, and the impact of the cyclone has led to various transportation disruptions, affecting air and rail travel. Passengers are advised to check the status of their flights, as the adverse weather conditions continue to impact travel schedules in the region.
