PM Narendra Modi’s personal Twitter handle was compromised’very briefly,’ but was later secured: PMO

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal Twitter handle was “very briefly compromised,” according to a tweet from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) early Sunday.

The matter was escalated to Twitter, and the Prime Minister’s personal Twitter handle @narendramodi was immediately secured, according to PMO India in a later tweet, adding that any tweet shared during the brief period when the account was compromised should be ignored.

#Hacked became a trending topic in India after PM Modi’s account was compromised. Several users on Twitter shared screenshots of tweets from PM Modi’s account claiming that “India has officially adopted bitcoin as legal tender.”

It was not immediately clear how long PM Modi’s personal Twitter handle, which has over 73 million followers, had been compromised.

According to Reuters, a Twitter spokesperson said in an emailed statement that the company took the necessary steps to secure the compromised account as soon as it became aware of the activity, and that an investigation revealed no evidence of any other impacted accounts at the time.

In September 2020, a similar incident occurred with the Twitter handle of PM Modi’s personal website @narendramodi in, with a series of tweets asking followers to donate to a relief fund using cryptocurrency.
