The Omicron variant, which is now present in 63 countries, may outpace the Delta variant in terms of spread speed: WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning that the new Omicron coronavirus strain, which is now present in 63 countries, will outstrip Delta in terms of spread speed.

According to Sputnik, “as of December 9, 2021, cases of human infections with this variant have been identified in 63 countries across all six WHO regions.”

The organization went on to say that it is still unclear why the new strain is spreading so quickly.

“However, given the currently available data, Omicron is likely to outpace the Delta variant where community transmission occurs,” the document stated.

According to preliminary data, the Omicron variant may reduce the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, but this strain is less dangerous than Delta, according to Sputnik.

“To date, there is little available data on vaccine efficacy or effectiveness for Omicron, and no peer-reviewed evidence. Preliminary evidence, as well as the significantly altered antigenic profile of the Omicron spike protein, suggests a reduction in vaccine efficacy against Omicron infection and transmission “According to the statement.
