India reports 6,317 new cases, the lowest active caseload in 575 days, and an Omicron tally of 213

NEW DELHI: According to data uploaded this morning by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India reported 6,317 new cases of coronavirus infections in the previous 24 hours on Wednesday.

According to the most recent Health Ministry data, the country also reported 318 deaths from COVID-18 and 6,906 recoveries during this time period. With 6,317 new cases, the country’s active caseload is now at 78,190, the lowest in 575 days.

In terms of the new COVID variant, India’s total Omicron case count is currently at 213, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Delhi and Maharashtra have reported 57 and 54 Omicron cases, respectively, out of the total 213 cases. According to data from the Union Health Ministry, 90 patients have been discharged after recovering.

To combat the “highly transmissible” new COVID variant, the Centre has asked states and union territories to “activate” war rooms, continue analyzing even minor trends and surges, and take strict and prompt containment action at the district and local levels.

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan advised states and union territories in a letter to implement strategic interventions for containment such as imposing a night curfew, strict regulation of large gatherings, limiting the number of weddings and funerals, and increasing testing and surveillance.

The Union Health Secretary’s letter highlights the steps that must be taken in light of early indications of an increase in COVID-19 cases, as well as increased detection of the concern variant Omicron in various parts of the country.

“At the district level, there should be a continuous review of emerging data regarding the population affected by COVID-19, geographical spread, hospital infrastructure, and utilization, manpower, notifying containment zones, enforcing containment zone perimeters, and so on.” This evidence should serve as the foundation for effective decision making at the district level,” the letter states.

“Such a strategy ensures that infection is contained at the local level before spreading to other parts of the state,” Bhushan wrote in his letter.

‘Activate war rooms.’

“Please activate the war rooms/EOCs (emergency operation centres) and continue to analyse all trends and surges, no matter how minor, and continue to take proactive action at the district/local level. Regular reviews with field officers and proactive action in this regard will undoubtedly control the spread of infection and flatten the curve “he stated.

In the case of any new clusters of Covid positive cases, prompt notification of “containment zones” and “buffer zones” should be made, and strict perimeter control of the containment zone should be ensured in accordance with existing guidelines.

COVID genome sequencing

Bhushan stressed that all cluster samples must be sent to INSACOG Labs for Genome Sequencing as soon as possible. The letter stated that test positivity of 10% or more in the previous week or bed occupancy of 40% or more on oxygen supported or ICU beds should be the main elements of the framework to be used by states and union territories to facilitate decision making at the district level.

“According to current scientific evidence, the VOC (a variant of concern) Omicron is at least three times more transmissible than the Delta VOC.” Furthermore, Delta VOC is still present in various parts of the country.

“As a result, increased foresight, data analysis, dynamic decision making, and strict and timely containment action are required at the local and district levels. Decisions at the state, UT, and district levels must be swift and focused “He stated.
