Despite mild illness, Long Covid is still a risk with Omicron, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci

Washington: Even if they only have a mild illness, people infected with Omicron are likely to have long Covid, according to top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Data from studies in South Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom show that Omicron causes mild illness and lower hospitalization rates. However, it is still too early to determine the severity of omicron.

“Long Covid can occur regardless of the virus variant. There is no evidence that there is a distinction between Delta, Beta, and now Omicron “In an interview with Spectrum News, Fauci was quoted as saying.

“We should always be aware that when people get an asymptomatic infection, anywhere from 10% to 30% or more of people will have persistent symptoms,” he added, noting that even mild cases are included in that possibility.

According to the report, he believes the label will change from “fully vaccinated” to “up to date” to indicate when someone has been boosted, which Fauci considers critical for virus protection.

“People should set aside their concerns about definitions and say, ‘If I want to be optimally protected, I should get boosted,'” he said.

According to Fauci, achieving a high vaccination rate will eliminate Covid infections for good.

“I’m hoping that more people who have been hesitant to get vaccinated will get vaccinated so that we can have a uniform blanket of protection across the country,” he said.

That shield of protection, according to Fauci, could help the US reduce Covid-19 to “such a low level that it does not interfere with our function as a society.”

“I’m always cautiously optimistic,” said Fauci. “However, I’m a realist. In terms of vaccinations, we must improve.
