Beeper Mini App Removed from Google Play Store Amid iMessage Struggle

The Beeper Mini app, designed to bring iMessage functionality to Android users, has reportedly been removed from the Google Play Store. The Beeper team confirmed the decision in a message to Beeper Cloud users, indicating that the iMessage feature has been relocated to the ‘Labs’ section within the Beeper Cloud app. This development follows Beeper’s announcement last month that the app had received its final update, signaling a de-escalation in the efforts to make iMessages work reliably on Android devices. Despite its removal from the Play Store, users can still sideload the Beeper Mini app using the apk file available on the Beeper website, while Beeper Cloud remains accessible on the Play Store. The company is now focusing on adding 14 other chat networks to the Beeper Mini Android app, with plans for improvements to the Beeper desktop app, including enhanced performance.

Beeper’s journey to provide iMessage on Android has been fraught with challenges, as Apple consistently thwarted its attempts, citing concerns about user security and privacy. The company admitted the sustainability issues of its efforts and announced the end of updates for the app if Apple disrupted its services. Despite Beeper’s accusations of Apple monopolizing iMessage to boost iPhone sales, Apple remains steadfast in its opposition to Beeper’s initiatives. Beeper Mini users interested in accessing iMessage on Android now need to register using a Mac, according to the latest updates from the company, highlighting the ongoing struggle between the two tech entities.
