On Monday, the Ministry of Earth Sciences’ System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 381 for the national capital, placing it in the “very poor” category (January 3, 2021).

An AQI of zero to 50 is considered “good,” 51 to 100 “satisfactory,” 101 to 200 “moderate,” 201 to 300 “poor,” 301 to 400 “very poor,” and 401 to 500 “severe.”

Meanwhile, the nation’s capital is currently experiencing a cold wave. According to the India Meteorological Department, Delhiites awoke to a cold morning on Sunday, with the minimum temperature settling at 5 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal (IMD).

On Monday, Delhi airport authorities said, “low visibility procedures are in progress at Delhi airport. All flight operations are presently normal.”

The IMD has predicted a cold to severe cold wave in northwest India until January 3.

A “severe” cold wave occurs when the minimum temperature falls below 2 degrees Celsius or the deviation from normal exceeds 6.4 degrees Celsius.
