The number of daily COVID-19 cases in India has skyrocketed, with the Omicron tally nearing 1,900

New Delhi: India continued to see a massive increase in daily COVID-19 cases, with 37,379 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday (January 4, 2022).

The new COVID-19 cases, driven by the Omicron variant, are the most since early September, bringing the country’s active caseload to 1,71,830. In a 24-hour period, there was an increase of 26,248 infections in the active caseload.

The daily positivity rate was 3.24 percent, while the weekly positivity rate was 2.05 percent.

In the last 24 hours, India recorded 11,007 recoveries and 124 deaths, according to the Health Ministry.

India has so far seen 3,43,06,414 recoveries and 4,82,017 coronavirus related fatalities.

So far, India has reported 1,892 cases of the Omicron variant across 23 states and UTs, with 766 patients recovering. The worst-affected states in the country have been Maharashtra (568 Omicron infections), Delhi (382), Kerala (185), and Rajasthan (174 cases).
