No standing passengers will be allowed in Delhi Metro trains, says DMRC

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced on Wednesday (January 5, 2022) that the metro will run at full capacity, with no standing passengers permitted until further notice.

“In the wake of the latest guidelines issued by DDMA, Delhi Metro will be running with 100 percent seating capacity & no standing passengers will be allowed until further notice,” the DMRC said in a Public Service Announcement.

Earlier on Tuesday, after the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) meeting, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia told a press conference that buses and Delhi Metro trains will once again run at full seating capacity, citing long lines at bus stops and stations that could become “super spreaders” if capacity was halved.

It’s worth noting that when the ‘yellow’ alert was sounded in the national capital, the Delhi Metro trains had 50 percent of their seats filled. The DMRC had advised people to ‘travel only if absolutely necessary and to ‘allow extra time for their Metro commutes because entry had to be controlled to ensure compliance with the rules.

“In general, an 8-coach Metro train can transport around 2400 passengers. Per coach, there are approximately 50 seated passengers and 250 standing passengers. Each coach can now only accommodate about 25 passengers due to the current restrictions of 50% seating and no standing. As a result, an eight-coach train can now only carry about 200 passengers. This represents less than 10% of a train’s normal carrying capacity “On December 30, 2021, the DMRC issued a statement.

In addition, the DDMA decided to impose a weekend curfew in the national capital. It will go into effect at 10 p.m. on Friday and will last until 5 a.m. on Monday, with only essential services permitted in the national capital during that time. Along with the weekend curfew, a night curfew will be enforced during the week.

“There have been lockdowns before, so people know what is allowed and what is not,” the deputy chief minister explained.

Those performing essential services during the weekend curfew will be issued an e-pass, he added.

On Tuesday, Delhi reported 5,481 new COVID-19 infections, the most since May 16. The case positivity rate has now reached 8.37 percent, the highest level since May 17, when it was 8.42 percent. There are currently 14,889 active coronavirus cases in the city.

In addition, three people were killed in the nation’s capital, the most since August 18.
