“Covid-19 pandemic nowhere near over; Omicron is not risk-free”

The World Health Organization (WHO) has once again cautioned against the narrative of highly-contagious Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 is mild and risk-free. The United Nations health agency’s chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters from the WHO headquarters in Geneva that the coronavirus pandemic is far from over.

The WHO chief said the Omicron variant has spread like wildfire across the world since it was first found in South Africa in November last year. So far, it has been observed that Omicron is a highly mutated variant of Covid-19 and it is much more contagious than previous strains. However, the variant appears to cause a less serious infection. Omicron is causing hospitalisations and deaths, and even the less severe cases are inundating health facilities,” he added.
