Life Imprisonment for Sanu Mohan in Vaiga Murder Case

In a significant development, Sanu Mohan has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Ernakulam Special Court in the Vaiga murder case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,70,000 on Mohan for the heinous crime. The shocking incident involved Mohan smothering his 11-year-old daughter, Vaiga, and later disposing of her body in the Muttar River.

The Ernakulam Special Court, having found all charges against Mohan to be proven, pronounced the life sentence for the murder and levied a fine of Rs one lakh. Additionally, Mohan was sentenced to 28 years of rigorous imprisonment in other related cases. The verdict follows the court’s earlier determination of his guilt in the case.

Despite Mohan’s plea for a lenient sentence, citing the responsibility of caring for his 70-year-old mother, the court remained resolute in its decision. The prosecution had sought the death penalty, arguing that the crime was of the “rarest of rare” nature.

The tragic incident unfolded on March 22, 2021, when Vaiga was found dead. According to the charge sheet filed by Thrikakkara Inspector K. Dhanapalan, Mohan committed the heinous act out of anger towards his wife, an excessive attachment to his daughter, and as a strategy to escape from a looming debt trap.

This verdict marks a conclusion to a deeply disturbing case that captured public attention and raised questions about the heinous nature of the crime committed against an innocent child.
