Shashi Tharoor Stresses the Need to Rebuild India-Canada Relationship Beyond Allegations
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor emphasized the importance of rebuilding the India-Canada relationship, which he views as fundamental and based on more than just one allegation. Tharoor expressed optimism that the two nations have much to offer each other, despite recent diplomatic tensions, and that the relationship can be restored over time.
He acknowledged the substantial trade relationship between India and Canada, highlighted the presence of a significant Indian diaspora in Canada, and noted that a substantial portion of Canada’s international student body comprises Indians. Tharoor stressed that the India-Canada relationship transcends any single incident or government, emphasizing its long-term significance.
Tharoor also expressed hope that both nations would handle the current controversy with maturity and composure to avoid causing lasting damage to the relationship. He underscored the importance of maintaining positive ties between India and Canada, given their historical connections and shared interests.
The India-Canada relationship became strained when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made allegations regarding India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This led to reciprocal expulsions of senior diplomats from both countries. India has firmly refuted these allegations as baseless and motivated.
Regarding the INDIA coalition in Kerala, Tharoor acknowledged the historical rivalry between the left front and the UDF in the state, suggesting that discussions and dynamics would differ based on each state’s unique circumstances.
Looking ahead to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Tharoor anticipated a significant increase in negative voting against the BJP government due to concerns about issues such as unemployment and rising commodity prices. He expressed confidence that the INDIA manifesto, which prioritizes harmony, social justice, and the upliftment of marginalized communities, could bring about a significant political shift in the elections.
