Alcohol consumers are falling in Kerala, liquor sales also drop

The alcohol consumers and the sales of liquor are falling in Kerala, says a survey published by the International Institute of Population Studies in Mumbai. The survey was conducted before the outbreak of Covid in the state. The study was held as a part of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS).

The data of the Beverages Corporation revealed that liquor sales started to decline in the state from 2018. It is observed that this is not a consequence of the Covid pandemic. With the spread of Covid, the sales dropped again. Though the liquor tax was increased by 45 per cent in 2020 and 2021, the revenue dropped drastically in 2021. Among these Successes of Vimukthi De-Addiction Centre, Increase in drug abuse, Hike in liquor prices and a decrease in people’s income are the reasons put forward by the survey.
