Bharat Bandh Day 2: Shops open, petrol pumps to operate

The two-day nationwide strike against the anti-labour policies of the central government created violence in some areas on Monday. While the second-day bandh begins with, vehicles started running in many places, petrol pumps were opened in Kochi and Kozhikode. Meanwhile, in the wake of the High Court order, the government has also issued an order making it compulsory for government employees to come to work. The trade unions had earlier informed that small-scale industries and shops would remain open.

On the first day of the strike, allegations arose that only a section of people was taking part in the strike while some people were not barred from opening shops. Only small shops are being targeted. This cannot be accepted. Considering this, all shops are to be opened on Tuesday, informed the Vyapari Vyavasaya coordination committee.

The first day of the Bharat bandh in Kozhikode looked similar to a hartal day but people started moving out by evening. Shops were open in rural areas but closed in cities. However, the Vyapari Vyavasaya Ekopana Samiti said that all the shops would be open on the second day. On the first day of the strike, it was decided to open shops in Kochi, alleging that it was meant to destroy only small shops and keep big malls functioning. Meanwhile, the Collector had ordered that petrol pumps in Kozhikode should be kept open.

Hence, the pumps are open from morning onwards. Petrol pumps in Kochi are also open. In many places, KSRTC, private buses and taxis did not operate. There were also incidents of violence in some places forcing workers to return home from work. Only 32 employees came to the secretariat on Monday. But ‘dies-non’ was announced after the High Court ruled that the government workers’ strike was illegal.
