Holy month of Ramadan to begin in Kerala from Sunday

Thiruvananthapuram: The Islamic holy month of Ramadan to begin in Kerala on Sunday with Islamic jurists (kazis) across Kerala confirming the sighting of the new moon at Pudhupettai in Tamil Nadu and Alungal beach in Malappuram’s Parappanangadi.

For a month, the devout Muslims will fast from dawn to dusk, engaging in special prayers and keeping away from several temporal activities.

Believers abstain from consuming any food or liquid between fajr and maghrib prayers (at dawn and sunset) for a whole month culminating with Eid-ul-Fitr.

Muslims follow a lunar calendar and a moon-sighting methodology can lead to different places declaring the start of Ramadan a day or two apart.

Muslim-majority nations including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria and the United Arab Emirates had declared the holiday would begin from Saturday morning.
