Colorful Cultural Procession Concludes Kerala’s Week-long Onam Festivities

The week-long Onam festivities organized by the Kerala Tourism Department concluded with a vibrant cultural procession in the state capital. Kerala Tourism Minister P. A. Mohamed Riyas announced a Rs 6 crore project for the development of the historic Kanakakunnu Palace, including the creation of a museum and an auditorium. This palace, built during the reign of Srimulam Thirunal, will be transformed into a tourism hotspot and a nightlife destination.

Minister Riyas highlighted the success of the Onam celebrations, emphasizing the unity and secularism of Kerala’s people. The closing ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Health Minister Veena George and Food and Civil Supplies Minister G. R. Anil. Actors Shane Nigam, Neeraj Madhav, and Antony Varghese were also present, along with a performance by Harisankar’s music band.

Kerala Tourism Director P. B. Nooh expressed gratitude, and prizes were awarded to winners of competitions held during the Onam festivities. Governor Arif Mohammed Khan flagged off the cultural procession, which featured Kerala Tourism’s ‘Garden of Lights’ float. The procession showcased diverse artistic and cultural traditions with the participation of around 3,000 artists and 60 floats. The celebrations began on August 27 with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurating the event, highlighting the theme of ‘Onam, the symphony of harmony.’

The festival, spanning various venues in the state capital and districts, received a positive response from the public, underscoring the cultural richness of Kerala.
