Nepal Struck by Deadly Earthquake: Rescue Efforts Underway

A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck Nepal’s Jajarkot district, claiming the lives of at least 128 people and leaving over 140 individuals injured. The earthquake’s epicenter was located in Jajarkot’s Lamidanda, with its impact felt in the capital city of Kathmandu and surrounding areas, reaching as far as New Delhi in India. Rescue efforts were immediately mobilized, with Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ leading a medical team to the affected site. Both Nepal Army and Nepal Police personnel have been deployed for rescue operations, focusing on pulling victims from collapsed structures.

The quake resulted in significant casualties, with 35 people reported dead in Rukum district, where numerous houses collapsed. Rescue teams have been working tirelessly, but some areas remain challenging to access due to landslides triggered by the tremor and its aftershocks. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of Nepal’s vulnerability to earthquakes, given its mountainous terrain. The country faced a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015, which claimed the lives of around 9,000 people and caused extensive damage to numerous structures.
