Low pressure may be extreme today; Saturday night will turn into hurricane

The state is on high alert against the backdrop of low pressure in the Arabian Sea. Red alert issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta districts and orange alert in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam districts. Low pressure is likely to intensify today. Saturday night will turn into a hurricane. The Kerala Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains, sea squalls, thunderstorms and winds of up to 60 kmph in Kerala. The government has directed the district collectors to take precautionary measures

Fishing off the coast of Kerala has been banned. Shipping near Kerala and Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea has been suspended. Warning was issued to ports and naval bases in Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Lakshadweep. The government has asked everyone to heed the warnings issued by the Meteorological Department and the Disaster Management Authority. Details of the weather forecast have also been passed on to neighboring countries such as Sri Lanka, Maldives and Pakistan.

Meanwhile, thirteen teams of the National Disaster Response Force were deployed in Kerala and Tamil Nadu due to low pressure in the Arabian Sea. Four teams left for Madurai and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and nine to Kerala from Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu. The troops will be deployed in Wayanad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kollam and Idukki districts. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said it had set up rescue and communication facilities in the event of floods and damaged buildings.
