Tata sells the most EVs in India history, and the Nexon is the best-selling SUV

Tata Motors sold over 2,000 Nexon and Tigor EVs in December 2021, demonstrating that electric vehicles are becoming more popular as more people opt for greener and cleaner alternatives. Tata Nexon, on the other hand, became India’s best-selling SUV in December 2021, outnumbering some prominent names from Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai.

Tata Motors, a homegrown electric car manufacturer, saw a 439 percent increase in electric car sales over the last year. 418 units were sold in December 2020, compared to 2,255 the previous month. Overcoming the 2,000-unit sales threshold is a significant achievement for Tata EVs. Tata sold 1,751 electric vehicles in November 2021, representing a 29% increase in December 2021.

Tata Motors continues to dominate the Indian electric car market despite having only two electric vehicles in its lineup: the Nexon EV and Tigor EV. The Nexon EV is currently India’s most popular electric vehicle. Tata also plans to launch the Altroz EV soon, as well as an electric version of their popular micro-SUV Punch in the future. “EV sales exceeded 10,000 units in FY22 and will surpass 2,000 monthly sales for the first time in December 2021,” said Shailesh Chandra, President of PVBU.

Tata intends to release an updated version of the Nexon EV with a larger battery and thus a longer range in the near future. Tata Motors has established its own Electric Vehicle subsidiary, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, in order to grow its electric vehicle business in the Indian market. The company recently raised Rs. 7,500 crore for its EV subsidiary, according to the company.

Tata Nexon, on the other hand, reported total sales of 12,899 units in December 2021, up from 6,835 units in the same period last year, representing an 88.7 percent YoY increase. Tata’s total sales in December 2011 were 35,299 units, up from 23,545 units in the same period the previous year, representing a positive YoY growth of 50%, making it the country’s second largest car seller, surpassing Hyundai.
