Supreme Court Dismisses Petition to Demolish Mosque on Krishna Janmabhoomi

The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal against the Allahabad High Court’s decision to reject a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the recognition of Mathura’s Shahi Idgah Mosque site as Krishna Janmabhoomi and the removal of the mosque. The bench, comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, stated that the PIL is not maintainable as there are already several civil suits addressing the raised issues pending consideration. The petitioner, Adv Mahek Maheshwari, was warned by the Supreme Court not to file such petitions in the future. The High Court had earlier dismissed the petitioner’s claim, stating that Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

Advocate Mahek Maheshwari’s petition seeking the recognition of Mathura’s Shahi Idgah Mosque site as Krishna Janmabhoomi and the removal of the mosque was dismissed by the Supreme Court, upholding the Allahabad High Court’s decision. The bench, consisting of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, emphasized that the PIL was not maintainable due to multiple pending civil suits addressing the same issues. The Supreme Court warned the petitioner against filing similar petitions in the future. The High Court had rejected the petition on October 12, 2023, stating that the mosque built on Krishna Janmabhoomi should not be demolished.
