North Korea claims Friday’s launch was a ‘new kind of ballistic missile’

North Korea informed that it conducted a “test firing of a new kind” of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Friday. However, Japan warned earlier on Friday that the missile had the potential range to reach the US mainland.

The “new” missile was a Hwaseong-17 and said that it launched from Pyongyang International Airfield and flew a distance of 999.2 km (621 miles).

The ICBM was launched around 10:15 a.m. local time from the Sunan area of the North Korean capital Pyongyang. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said. The US said it was a “brazen” violation of UN resolutions.
