WhatsApp Reportedly Introducing New Label for Enhanced End-to-End Encryption Visibility

WhatsApp is said to be working on a new feature that introduces an end-to-end encryption (E2EE) label for individual and group conversations. This development aims to provide users with clearer visibility into the encryption status of their messages. The label, spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.6.11, confirms that the messages exchanged are encrypted, emphasizing that WhatsApp does not store any related information.

The addition of this encryption label follows Meta’s recent challenges with E2EE, leading to delays in implementing third-party chats in Europe due to the enactment of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The new label, as reported by WABetaInfo, appears below the contact or group name, featuring a lock icon and the text “end-to-end encrypted.” The label vanishes after a few seconds, reverting to the last seen status in individual chats and displaying participants’ names in group conversations.

While WhatsApp already displays an E2EE label on the home screen and during voice and video calls, this new label offers an additional layer of encryption visibility within the chat itself. The intent seems to be providing users with a proactive reminder about the encryption status, ensuring it remains easily visible.

Given Meta’s recent concerns about encryption risks with third-party chats in Europe, this new feature aims to reinforce users’ awareness of the secure nature of their conversations. Meta has emphasized its commitment to encryption at the user’s end and during data transit but highlighted challenges in ensuring the same level of security once data reaches third-party platforms. The social media giant has encouraged messaging apps to sign agreements with Meta and adopt either the Signal protocol or another compatible protocol. The introduction of this encryption label could serve as a practical reminder to users about the ongoing commitment to their privacy and security within the messaging app.
